According to National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Natasha Ramkisson, the events unfolded on 12 October 2025 at the family home.

The morning appeared routine: the father left the residence while the mother and child were reportedly playing together. Yet, upon his return, the atmosphere had altered profoundly. Although he first observed his partner cuddling the baby, he soon became alarmed by the infant’s complete lack of movement.

This concern quickly turned to dread as the child failed to respond, even while the mother changed the baby’s nappy.

“When the accused indicated that she wanted to leave with the infant, the father insisted that she wake the child before leaving. The infant remained unresponsive, and the father realised that the child might be deceased,” Ramkisson stated.

In distress, the father promptly called on a neighbour for help.

Police and paramedics arrived swiftly at the scene, but the infant was declared dead by medical personnel. Officers arrested the mother on arrival, and a subsequent post-mortem examination confirmed asphyxiation as the cause of death.

“In court, the accused confessed to the murder, stating that she committed the offence following an argument she had with the infant’s father,” Ramkisson explained.

The prosecution was led by State Prosecutors Marion Willis-Smith and Khethiwe Kunene.

During the sentencing hearing, the State highlighted the offence’s gravity and pressed for the harshest available penalty. As Ramkisson elaborated:

“In aggravation of sentence, the State submitted that the accused had other options available instead of resorting to murder. The accused could have handed the child over to social services or considered placing the child for adoption. The infant’s father testified on behalf of the State, stating that he remains traumatised by the incident and has lost trust in women as a result.”

“The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) remains steadfast in its commitment to uphold the rule of law and pursue justice without fear, favour, or prejudice. The NPA will continue to safeguard the rights and dignity of all members of society, particularly children and other vulnerable groups. Parents have a fundamental responsibility to protect their children,” Ramkisson concluded.
