The R34 between Memel and Newcastle has come under renewed scrutiny after being described as a “ticking time bomb” for both motorists and the surrounding environment. The remarks have prompted calls for urgent intervention from the Free State MEC for Community Safety, Roads and Transport, Jabu Mbalula, including a comprehensive technical audit of the affected section.
The concerns were formally raised by Democratic Alliance (DA) councillor Ntombi Mokoena of Phumelela Municipality in Vrede.

In written questions submitted to the MEC, Mokoena requested clarity on the ongoing situation and sought accountability regarding work being undertaken by the South African National Roads Agency Ltd (SANRAL), which is responsible for maintaining the route.
According to Mokoena, a serious structural issue has been identified beneath the road surface. She stated:
“A critical structural failure has been identified: an underground municipal water pipe, reportedly connected to the sewage system, is leaking directly into the foundation of this vital national route. This leakage is not only compromising the road’s stability but is causing raw sewage to flow into the nearby stream, creating a ‘ticking time bomb’ for both motorists and the local ecosystem.”

She further warned that the continuous flow of water and sewage is weakening the road’s base, potentially creating hazardous driving conditions.
The affected section has reportedly developed an uneven surface, forming what she described as a hazardous “hump” that forces motorists to slow to approximately 20km/h to pass safely.
Beyond road safety, Mokoena emphasised the strategic importance of the R34. The route serves as a key economic corridor linking the Free State and KwaZulu-Natal, particularly for agricultural and logistics traffic. Any prolonged instability could therefore have broader economic implications.
Temporary warning signage has been installed by the Phumelela Municipality to alert motorists to the danger.
However, Mokoena argued that these measures do not address the root cause, namely the damaged underground pipe and the compromised road foundation. She further raised concern that permanent remedial action has not yet been implemented.
In response to what it views as insufficient progress at municipal level, the DA Phumelela Caucus has escalated the matter to the Free State Provincial Legislature. The caucus is calling for urgent provincial intervention to ensure that a detailed technical assessment is conducted and that corrective measures are implemented without delay.
As previously reported by Newcastillian News in November 2023, SANRAL assumed responsibility for the R34 from the Free State Province following sustained efforts by Memel residents to have the road declared a national route.
The transfer was intended to secure improved funding and maintenance for what had long been regarded as a deteriorating corridor.
The current maintenance programme, which officially began in February 2024, includes pothole repairs, drainage cleaning, grass cutting, removal of edge build-up, repair of edge breaks, resurfacing, strengthening works, and the replacement of faded road markings and signage.
However, questions remain as to whether these routine surface-level interventions address the alleged underground leakage identified by local representatives.
Newcastillian News approached both SANRAL and the office of the MEC for Community Safety, Roads and Transport for comment. No response had been received at the time of publication.
Until a formal technical audit is conducted and its findings made public, uncertainty remains over the structural integrity of the affected section.

While surface maintenance is underway, the reported underground leakage presents a potentially more serious engineering concern that, if left unresolved, could affect both road safety and the reliability of this key Free State–KwaZulu-Natal transport link.
