Seven suspects linked to a string of business robberies across KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng, and Mpumalanga have been arrested in Newcastle, following an organised police sting that halted the group’s crime spree.

As confirmed by Newcastle SAPS spokesperson Lizzy Arumugam, the operation was initiated following a tip-off received on Saturday, 21 February 2026.

The intelligence indicated that seven suspects were travelling to Newcastle with the intention of carrying out burglaries, specifically targeting business premises and attempting to cut open safes.

Acting on this information, SAPS officers worked alongside private security companies and community crime-fighting volunteers to establish a dedicated operational task team.

Even as the task team was being assembled, Arumugam confirmed that the suspects appeared to abandon their initial plans. While it remains unclear whether they became aware of the police operation, officers maintained their deployment to ensure the withdrawal was not a diversion.

That caution proved justified.

On Sunday, 22 February 2026, further intelligence indicated that the suspects were planning to target a business on Allen Street.

Law enforcement responded by positioning members strategically and placing the identified premises under surveillance.

After several hours of surveillance, the operational team observed a black Audi sedan at approximately 10:30 pm, dropping off individuals at various locations within the Newcastle CBD. Officers maintained their positions, monitoring the suspects’ movements while awaiting confirmation of unlawful entry.

According to Arumugam, once technology confirmed that the suspects had entered a business premises, members moved in. The suspects allegedly attempted to flee in different directions, but coordinated tactical action resulted in all seven being apprehended.

Police recovered numerous suspected stolen items, housebreaking implements, and the Audi vehicle.

Preliminary investigations have since linked the suspects to multiple business burglaries and robberies across KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng, and Mpumalanga.

“Further police investigations are currently underway to identify and apprehend additional members linked to this syndicate,” stated Arumugam.

The arrests represent a significant disruption of a mobile group suspected of targeting businesses across three provinces. The operation underscores the role of intelligence-driven policing and coordinated efforts between SAPS, private security, and community crime-fighting structures in addressing organised business crime.
