Amid the intense summer heat on Tuesday, 10 February 2026, a crowd gathered along the Allen Street Bridge in Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal, overlooking Trim Park, where paramedics formally pronounced a man dead following a stabbing.
The incident is understood to have begun shortly before 2 pm at the Taxi Rank shopping centre, where the deceased allegedly attempted to rob an individual near one of the shops.

According to an eyewitness who spoke to Newcastillian News, members of the public intervened, prompting the man to flee in the direction of Trim Park.
“They ran out of the parking lot, and from there I did not see anything. It was only when I was walking over the bridge that I saw all these people there and saw the man lying there in the park,” she said.
A senior official at the scene confirmed that the exact circumstances surrounding the fatal stabbing remain under investigation.
Initial information indicates that the man was pursued by members of the community and stabbed in the park.

However, authorities have cautioned that it has not yet been established whether the incident constitutes an act of community justice.
Emergency services were alerted to an injured man in Trim Park. Despite their efforts, the man succumbed to his injuries shortly after paramedics arrived.
Newcastle SAPS has opened a murder docket and is appealing to anyone who witnessed the events, either at the Taxi Rank shopping centre or in Trim Park, to come forward with information that may assist investigators.
At the same time, SAPS has urged members of the public to exercise restraint, noting that while intervention may be well-intentioned, such situations can escalate rapidly and lead to severe consequences.

Authorities emphasised that suspected criminal activity should be reported and addressed through lawful channels.

What will the SAPS do they always have no vans available.if it was the community I’m proud of them for getting rid of one problem it’s about time we stood against crime in this town
The public are fed up with the violence and the lawlessness in our town. They have no trust in police and know that something must be done to start standing up to the thugs who roam our streets at will. Good riddance to one of them.
I most definitely agree with the above comment

Negative headlines on local Municipality, Mittal closure , Sawmill / Factories Arrests… mines closure , rejection on new mines will make Newcastle a next Ghost town .Is that what we want as local Residents/ businesses. A Big NO .So let’s fix the Town problems ,by ridding criminality within Foreigners, which at large are also Pakistan / India Mafia Nigerians Malawian construction Mafias in CBD ,which are protected by All law enforcement staff ,which Seniors sit down in air con offices .What law enforcement is needed in straight line front of Dealership. Riverside concentration Foreigners are not Criminality in this town but will only further deepen the crisis in abondant building used by squatters and ” PARAS” who flith the businesses fronts, many more could be said ,ones life is more important….
