Henrico Oosthuizen Murder Case: Family Opposes Bail at Newcastle Court

Henrico Oosthuizen bail hearing

Despite the sweltering heat on Wednesday morning, 17 December 2025, the family and friends of the late Henrico Oosthuizen gathered outside the Newcastle Magistrates Court, holding placards calling for murder accused Suluman Tyob to be denied bail. Their presence reflected both profound grief and determination for justice, following a tragedy that has shaken Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal.

As reported by Newcastillian News on 10 December 2025, Henrico passed away after he and his cousin, Diederick Marx, intervened to protect a youngster who was being assaulted by another man, who had already struck the boy with a bottle.

As explained by Diederick at the time, the cousins were leaving Melos Pub & Grill, after playing pool, when Henrico noticed the assault and insisted they intervene. Although the initial assailant fled, Tyob reportedly arrived shortly afterwards and began threatening the teenagers.

Originally, the bail proceedings were scheduled for Court B, but they were transferred at the last minute to Court A. Outside the courthouse, the tension was palpable, and once inside, a heavy silence fell across the courtroom as Tyob entered a packed chamber.

Amid the watchful presence of both families, the State informed the court that it would oppose bail but requested a postponement.

In response, Tyob’s defence attorney, Zubair Chothia, also sought an adjournment, during which he would provide the necessary bail information. Consequently, the case was postponed to 24 December 2025.

In the days leading up to the hearing, Henrico’s aunt, Cindy Grobler, described the family’s ongoing anguish. “It is extremely difficult for all of us, and his parents are struggling to cope without him. Nadia, Henrico’s mother, will often cry,” she said, reflecting the profound grief that has engulfed the household.

Against this backdrop of loss, Nadia Oosthuizen issued a heartfelt appeal to the community, urging residents to attend the bail hearing at the Newcastle Magistrates Court in support of the family. “No parent should fear for their child’s life when they walk on the streets, irrespective of the time. And what right did he have, as an adult man, to hit Henrico, a 17-year-old child, on the head with a pipe? I do not want him to do to another parent as what he did to us,” she stated.

Furthermore, echoing her plea, Grobler called on the people of Newcastle to stand in solidarity with the family in court and amplify demands that Tyob remain in custody pending trial.
