Newcastle Teen Henrico Oosthuizen Dies After Assault: Family And Witnesses Reveal What Happened

Henrico Oosthuizen death

A dark cloud hangs over Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal, following the death of 17-year-old Henrico Oosthuizen, who succumbed to severe injuries after a violent assault while trying to help his cousin intervene in an attack on another young man. His sudden loss has left family and friends reeling, as they grapple with the profound void his death has created.

The incident unfolded on Saturday night, 6 December 2025, when Henrico and his cousin and best friend, 22-year-old Diederick Marx, went out to play pool after spending the day celebrating a family birthday.

Looking back on that fatal night, Diederick explained that he and Henrico had gone to Melos Pub & Grill to enjoy a few games of pool. “We had celebrated a cousin’s birthday earlier that day, and were intending to spend the night at my place, and while at home, we all decided to go and play some pool,” he began.

While at the local pub, the two played pool with the same cousin they had been with earlier in the day. When Melos called last rounds, the trio began to leave, with Henrico and Diederick then walking home to Diederick’s residence.

It was at this point that the night took a tragic turn. As they made their way home in the early hours of the morning, Diederick recalled, “Henrico was about 5 metres in front of me, when he saw what looked like a homeless African male attacking another young man we know, using a broken bottle. Henrico immediately said we must go help him, as it looked like he had been hurt.”

Although the African male allegedly fled, prompting a brief chase, the situation escalated once more. When it appeared that matters had calmed, a bakkie suddenly sped towards them as they walked along Gemsbok Street in Hutten Heights.

An Indian male jumped out of the vehicle and, according to Diederick, aggressively approached them while threatening to “put Henrico in his place”. Diederick explained that he attempted to intervene to protect his teenage cousin from the threatening man.

“He then started to walk to his car, and we heard people screaming at us that he was taking a gun out of the car, and Henrico and myself immediately began running. But as we turned to look behind us, we saw that the man had a pipe in his hands. Everyone is saying it might have been a baseball bat, but it was a pipe. We stopped running, and decided to approach him again,” said Diederick. He added that as they drew closer, the man appeared as though he intended to strike them. Fearing for their safety, Diederick attempted to defend them but slipped.

“I tried hitting him, I slipped and it was then that he hit Henrico on the side of the head. Henrico fell and as I started standing up, the man hit me in the shoulder and hand, as I tried standing up. At one stage, I do not know if someone pushed him or what, as I was quite dazed, but I heard the pipe fall. I also heard Henrico say, ‘my head.’,” Diederick explained.

The Indian male then fled the scene, after which Henrico and Diederick continued to Diederick’s home. “When we got to my house, everything was still fine, we were all still talking about what happened that night, and afterwards I said I was going to sleep, as my shoulder was hurting a lot. While in my bedroom, I heard as if someone stumbled badly in the bathroom and I went to look. I then saw my cousin trying to open the bathroom door, as Henrico was inside, and the door would not open,” he added.

The two young men forced the door open and found Henrico dazed and struggling to stand. Despite their attempts to assist him, he collapsed after taking only two steps. He then suffered seizures, prompting the cousins to immediately call Henrico’s parents, who rushed him to hospital.

Newcastle South African Police Service spokesperson, Lizzy Arumugam, explained that when the responding police officer arrived at Mediclinic Newcastle, Henrico was in a critical condition. The Newcastle SAPS immediately launched an investigation.

During this period, Henrico was found to have bleeding on the brain. Despite receiving urgent medical care, he tragically passed away on Monday, 8 December 2025, leaving behind a devastated family grappling with immeasurable loss.

Furthermore, Arumugam confirmed that a suspect has since been apprehended and taken into police custody, with the individual expected to appear in court this week.

Reflecting on his cousin’s life, Diederick described Henrico as a vibrant and caring individual who loved pool, darts, and spending time with loved ones. He emphasised Henrico’s compassion and instinct to help others. “Henrico and my aunt were driving one day, and it was raining, and they saw a dog which looked extremely neglected. Henrico made my aunt go get food for the dog. He was a loving person,” said an emotional Diederick.

A distraught Nadia Oosthuizen, struggling to speak through her grief, explained that Henrico and his cousins had not initially mentioned the outing to Melos. However, she said they immediately informed her of the incident as soon as Henrico began experiencing seizures.

Reminiscing about her son, Nadia described Henrico as a lively young man who took joy in helping others and bringing smiles to those around him. “He could be so cheeky but in a good and funny way, he was such a free soul.”

Now, however, Nadia must confront the devastating reality of losing her youngest child, having already lost her eldest son, Dean, in a fatal vehicle collision along Drakensberg Drive in May last year.

As the Oosthuizen family are left reeling, Samantha Shaw from Melos explained how tragic the entire incident was and claimed she could not understand what could have transpired to set this all off after they left; stating, “All of them were inside Melos at one stage, with none of them talking to each other or even being in the same part of the premises.”

In the wake of this devastating loss, the Oosthuizen family now faces a void that cannot be filled, as they try to navigate the emotional aftermath of yet another tragedy. Their grief is compounded by the unbearable reality that Henrico’s final moments were shaped by an instinct to protect others—an instinct that had defined so much of his young life.

As they gather around one another for strength, their focus remains on honouring the integrity, kindness, and courage that Henrico consistently showed.

At the same time, the community is left confronting difficult questions about the violence that claimed the life of a teenager whose only intention that night was to help someone in distress. While the legal process moves forward, those closest to Henrico continue to seek solace in the memories he leaves behind—memories of a boy who brought warmth into the lives of those around him. Their hope, now, is that justice will be served and that Henrico’s legacy will stand as a reminder of the compassion he so readily extended to others.

Newcastillian News extends our condolences to the family and thanks them for speaking with us during this difficult time.

  1. We had an incident in Dundee in February this year. 20 something boy walks over to another family acquaintance and hits him open with a knuckle duster causing nerve damage above his eye and other medical issues. From medical costs, it’s now lawyer fees because instead of addressing issues of anger management and perhaps poor parenting, they rather burn the whole village ! No justice 😢

  2. I’d like to say that henrico and i were very close, i took him as a brother, i never had the opportunity to meet him in person. We only ever played video games together over the past 3 and a half years but his impact on my life is something that i know i will never be able to fill or replace. I will miss our gaming sessions till 3 in the morning and our calls. You never know what you have until it’s gone and i will surely miss him deeply and i pray for Henrico’s family during this time to find the peace, comfort and safety that they need. Our memories together will carry me forward.

    1. Yea bro reading this really made me tear up bro our gang isnt gonna be the same without him group calls wont be the same and late nights too on cod im really gonna miss him bro

  3. Henrico was a good friend of mine the group isnt gonna be the same without him we all used to play video games together till the Crack of dawn and they will forever be the best memories of my life.

  4. I didn’t know Henrico for long. Maybe just a few moments in a busy life. But somehow… those few moments became memories I’ll carry forever.
The night at the Falcon Festival at Ferrum High School still sits heavy in my chest. He didn’t have to help us he was only 17, with a whole world he could’ve been enjoying. He could’ve been laughing with friends, walking under the festival lights, just being young. But instead… he stood with us.
I remember watching him rushing back and forth, trying to keep up with all the orders. His hands were shaking, his fingers burning, but he never complained. Not once. He just kept going, kept helping, kept smiling like his pain didn’t matter… like we mattered more.
It breaks my heart because people like him are rare. The kind who choose kindness over comfort. The kind who give more than they should, even when nobody expects it. The kind who leave fingerprints on your life after just a few moments.
And that’s why the sadness hits so deeply because I know how easy it is for stories like his to fade away. People move on. Memories blur. Life keeps going. But Henrico… he deserves better than that. He deserves to be remembered. He deserves to be kept alive in our hearts, not for what he had, but for what he gave
I will never forget him the boy who sacrificed his own comfort for others, who burned his fingers and still smiled. He didn’t just help us that night… he showed us what real goodness looks like. And losing someone like that leaves an ache that never fully goes away.
His story shouldn’t fade. Not now. Not ever. Because souls like his are the ones the world needed most.

  5. Not to sound inconsiderate or harsh, considering the fact that someone died, but if someone has a weapon of any kind, it’s best to run away and live to see another day. Also, the fact that the young man interviewed mentions the fighting but not what started it leads me to believe they could’ve been the ones who instigated the whole thing. There’s a big difference between helping hungry strays and attempting to assault an armed person, no matter the series of events that preceded the altercation. If anything, this should serve as a warning to young men in and around Newcastle — sometimes it’s okay to walk away from a fight, especially if the person you are fighting is armed.

    1. As he clearly stated if you read the entire article in detail you will see it sais they never had any communication with the man even though they were in the same pub but never the same part at the same time AND I QUOTE {Samantha Shaw from Melos explained how tragic the entire incident was and claimed she could not understand what could have transpired to set this all off after they left; stating, “All of them were inside Melos at one stage, with none of them talking to each other or even being in the same part of the premises.”}

THEY SIMPLY STOPPED TO HELP ANOTHER YOUNG MAN WHOM WAS BEING ATTACKED AND FOR THAT HE PAYED WITH HIS LIFE!
So with all do respect in the future read the article finished while actually paying attention to what your reading before commenting what your lead to believe yes your free to have your options but please KEEP IT TO YOURSELF!
HENRICO DIED NOTHING OTHER THAN A KIND HEARTED HELPFULL YOUNG MAN AND SURE AS HELL DIDN’T INSTIGATE LOOSING HIS LIFE.

Besides lets humar you for a second even if they said something or started something if you want to say that NOTHING THEY COULD HAVE SAID OR STARTED SHOULD HAVE MADE THAT MAN TAKE THAT BOYS LIFE!!

    2. Henrico will forever be missed, and my heartfelt condolences to Nadia Oosthuizen and the rest of the family!! He was taken way to young ! !
      …..

It is deeply disturbing to live in a world where human life is increasingly disregarded making it as easy for some individuals to take a life as it is to perform a mundane task like baking a cake!!
What’s even more alarming is that those who commit such heinous crimes can seemingly continue with their lives without any indication of remorse!
As a parent, I am filled with anxiety and concern for my children’s well-being because raising them in today’s world feels like I am risking their lives for the simple fact that they could be walking with friends and at any moment {in broad daylight or the dark night} in an instant they could be taken away from me in the most devastating manners!!
Has humanity reached a point where life is no longer valued?
If so, I am ashamed to be a part of it!!🙌🏼

  6. What is a 17 year old doing in a pub? The pool area is also surrounded by slot machines so no under 18s should even be there playing pool. Where are the witnesses who screamed?

    1. Why do you comment, do you have children? Rather keep your thoughts to yourself. You don’t know Henrico.if you are without sin then you can through a stone. Henrico, paid with his life, to save the life of some one he did not know. This did not happen in the pub. It happen outside on the way home. Will you do the same as Henrico? No you don’t have the guts to do it! If you have children you try to keep them from going out. a person who only condemns, and sees nothing good in others.
henrico paid with his life for a stranger.
you wouldn’t even do it for one of your family or even your child.
I, as henrico and his older brother dean’s grandmother who was only 20 years old, tell you today, the word of the Lord, do not judge, because with the same judgement you judged, you will also be judged.
it is with bitterly hurt broken hearts that we have to say goodbye to the 2nd brother in a short time after each other.
henrico grandma is proud of your son.
If ever you want to judge any one again. Rather keep your mouth shut and your thoughts to yourself.

  7. I’m really going to miss his smile and friendly greeting, this boy was not just a boy but a young man with a beautiful character,as a mom who has lost a teenage boy I can only say be strong mother and know that Henrico’s smile will live in the hearts of all that had the pleasure of meeting him. This is truly a huge loss of a beautiful young life.May justice be true and his heroic efforts not go unseen.

  11. The suspects lawyer is obviously extremely clever to have mentioned those reasons in he’s affidavit which clearly the magistrate and prosecutor fell for. These reasons in the affidavit why the suspect should not be detained are probably not Evan true. Our justice system in South Africa is clearly not up to scratch. A young man lost he’s life this is murder this is attent to do grevious bodily harm this is attempted murder.. Come on now.. And the Investigating officer also stated that the accused would not be a threat to the witnesses Oh please. In my opinion this Accused is definitely and probably 100% a substance abuser and probably alcoholic as well and is definitely a threat to the society and community. He is unstable and cannot be trusted to be around anyone. If he can take a gun out and hit young children with pipes come on He is capable of much more. Imagine what else he will do. He has now been granted bail after murdering someone do u think he will have any remorse or Evan think of the consequences of murdering someone again.. NO HE WON’T BECAUSE PSYCHOLOGICALLY HE WILL REMAIN IN THE MINDSET THAT HE’S LAWYER WILL GET HIM OUT OF TROUBLE AGAIN AND THAT THERE ARE ABSOLUTELY NO CONSEQUENCES FOR THIS BEHAVIOR..! I HOPE AND PRAY JUSTICE IS SERVED.. JUST AS MUCH AS HE’S FAMILY NEEDS HIM TO SUPPORT THEM SO DID THE DECEASED FAMILY NEED HIM TOO.. THEY HAVE LOST A SON LAST YEAR IN AN ACCIDENT NOW THEY HAVE LOST THEIR LAST SON DUE TO THE IRRESPONSIBLE AND NEGLEGANCE OF A 26 YEAR OLD WHO HAS NO REMORSE OR EVAN ACCOUNTABILITY FOR HE’S ACTIONS. JUSTICE MUST BE SERVED AND THE FAMILY SHOULD GO TO ALL MEASURES AND EXTREMES TO ENSURE THIS!
