Motorists are being warned of a temporary closure on the N11 near Ladysmith in KwaZulu-Natal, as the South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) carries out essential road upgrades.

The affected section, stretching from the R103/N11 intersection to Van der Stel Street, will be closed for three days, allowing crews to stabilise lanes as part of a larger, ongoing rehabilitation project. Consequently, drivers are advised to plan their journeys carefully and allow extra travel time to avoid delays.

According to SANRAL, the closure will commence at 08:00 on Monday, 27 October 2025, and is expected to conclude at 14:00 on Thursday, 30 October 2025.

While a stop-and-go traffic system was initially considered, it was ultimately deemed unsuitable due to lane width limitations and the associated safety risks. Therefore, a full closure has been implemented as the safest and most effective method to carry out the necessary work.

To mitigate disruption, comprehensive traffic accommodation plans and detour signage will be in place.

Motorists are urged to follow all posted signage, anticipate potential delays, and remain vigilant while navigating the affected area.

In addition, truck and heavy vehicle drivers are strongly advised to make use of the recommended detours, while public transport operators should inform their drivers of both the closure and alternative routes to ensure minimal interruption to services.

Alternative routes are as follows:

From N11 South (heading towards Ladysmith):

  • Continue over the bridge without taking the slipway.
  • Turn right at the next intersection (R103/Harrismith Road).
  • Follow Harrismith Road/King Street into town.

From Town/Newcastle direction:

  • Enter town via N11/Lyell Street.
  • Turn right at the King and Lyell Street intersection (N11).
  • Continue along King Street, which becomes Harrismith Road.
  • Turn left onto R103 and continue south to rejoin the N11.

“SANRAL thanks the public for their patience and cooperation as work continues to improve the N11 and reduce future congestion in the area,” stated SANRAL.

As a portion of the N11 now faces temporary closures, it should be noted, as reported by Newcastillian News, that SANRAL has been undertaking a comprehensive rehabilitation programme along the corridor since early 2024.

The project spans from Ladysmith South to the Nkunzi River and aims to improve travel conditions, enhance safety, and reduce congestion.

The work involves widening lanes, adding climbing lanes in key areas, resurfacing road sections, stabilising critical stretches, and modernising bridges.

According to further updates by Newcastillian News, the rehabilitation is being executed in phases. Phase 1, covering Ladysmith to Elandslaagte, is currently underway, while Phase 2, from Elandslaagte to the Nkunzi River, is in the final stages of contractor procurement.

These upgrades also include intersection improvements, realignment of certain road sections, and the installation of new culverts. SANRAL anticipates the overall programme will be completed by late 2026.

Motorists are advised to remain patient during this temporary closure, as alternative routes are expected to be busier than usual.

Road Angels South Africa is currently urging drivers to exercise caution, plan their journeys ahead, and allow extra travel time while navigating detours. Adhering to posted signage and following recommended routes will help ensure safety and minimise congestion throughout the closure period.

It is also important for residents and commuters to remember that weather conditions and unforeseen circumstances can affect travel, and they should continue monitoring reliable traffic services, SANRAL updates, and media outlets for any changes or advisories.
