Exciting changes are underway along the N11 route, with the South African National Road Agency (SANRAL) leading extensive rehabilitation efforts to improve travel conditions.
These upgrades aim to alleviate congestion and enhance safety measures for motorists.
Ayandamabhaca Chagwe, SANRAL’s Eastern Region Project Manager, explained, “SANRAL is currently undertaking the road construction upgrade on the N11 (between Ladysmith South and Nkunzi River). The works entail the widening of the N11 and providing additional climbing lanes where needed. This will ease traffic flow upon completion as there has been an increase in traffic along the N11.”
Chagwe pointed out that the project is divided into two phases. The contract for Phase 1 was awarded to Raubex Construction (Pty) Ltd in February 2023 at a cost of R864,888,000 (inclusive of VAT). The contractor for Phase 2 is yet to be procured.
“Phase 1 (between Ladysmith and Elandslaagte) commenced in March 2023 and is due for completion late in 2026. Phase 2 (between Elandslaagte and Nkunzi River) is due to commence in the first half of 2024. Construction activities will, therefore, take place up to 2028 – which will affect commuters along the N11,” explained Chagwe.
Looking at the current workload, Chagwe explained that in the short term, there will be delays in travel time, due to the construction activities to be undertaken affecting travelling (such as rumble strips and reduced travel speed).
However, upon completion, the road will be safer for motorists, as dangerous curves will be realigned. “The existing N11 will be widened to the new prescribed road cross section. New lined stormwater drains will be constructed, and subsoil drains installed. Gabions and retaining walls will be installed in identified sections, among other benefits. All this will improve safe travelling on the route,” concluded Chagwe.

Why did you not start from Ermelo? That road is in such a bad state that you could barely stay on the road between Ermelo and Mkondo. Sometimes i wonder who exactly decide which part needs an upgrade. This is quite obvious they don’t use these roads as they are death traps
