South Africa is fast becoming one of the world’s leaders in artificial intelligence adoption, with 93% of businesses already integrating AI into their operations, a figure that surpasses the global average of 88%, according to University World News.

From banking and mining to retail and education, AI is reshaping how South Africans live and work at a pace few expected. While this rapid uptake brings new opportunities in productivity, innovation, and economic growth, it also raises pressing questions about job displacement, digital access, and the need for stronger regulation.

In South Africa, people are embracing AI to simplify tasks and enhance productivity.

For instance, a Moneyweb article from 23 August 2025 describes individuals using tools like ChatGPT to convert school PDFs into calendar files, streamlining personal organisation.

Moreover, businesses like Legal Interact employ AI for virtual legal advice, while retailers such as Takealot leverage AI-driven chatbots for customer support, as noted in a News24 report from 29 August 2024. In households, AI-powered smart home devices manage energy use, and students benefit from platforms like Siyavula for personalised learning, per Regent Business School on 25 July 2024. A Kaspersky survey from 2025 reveals South Africans using AI for budgeting, content creation, and meal planning, with 91% believing AI will significantly transform life by 2030, according to Google research.

Beyond daily life, AI is reshaping employment, particularly in finance and technology sectors at an almost unbelievable pace. A World Economic Forum report from 12 August 2025 highlights AI tools, like chatbots and automation, replacing roles such as data entry and customer service.

Companies like Amazon and Google use AI to manage routine inquiries, reducing the need for human staff, as noted in a Forbes article on 25 April 2025. Additionally, Goldman Sachs reported on 13 August 2025 that AI could impact 6 to 7 per cent of US jobs, affecting millions in administrative and analytical roles.

However, PwC’s 2025 Global AI Jobs Barometer indicates AI-related roles are growing 3.5 times faster than others, creating new opportunities.

Jobs already significantly impacted by AI include:

  • Data Entry: AI systems process and input data faster, reducing the need for human clerks.
  • Customer Service: Chatbots handle basic inquiries in industries like retail and banking.
  • Telemarketing: Automated systems make calls and manage sales scripts.
  • Basic Analytics: AI tools analyse data trends, replacing some entry-level analyst roles.

Looking forward, AI is likely to affect roles like coding, legal research, and financial analysis. A CNBC report from 30 April 2025 notes a 35 per cent drop in US entry-level job postings since January 2023, linked to AI taking over tasks like software development.

Anthropic’s CEO Dario Amodei warned in an Axios interview on 28 May 2025 that AI could eliminate half of entry-level white-collar jobs, potentially raising unemployment to 10%-20% within one to five years. Moreover, a VKTR analysis from 30 July 2025 highlights vulnerabilities in routine coding and legal research. Without retraining, these shifts could widen income gaps, but they may also encourage a focus on creative and strategic roles, boosting productivity.

Despite job losses, AI also creates a wide variety of new career paths.

A New York Times article from 17 June 2025 lists 22 emerging roles, including AI ethicists, prompt engineers, and machine learning experts. Coursera’s 2024 overview highlights high-demand positions like data annotators and AI research scientists, offering competitive salaries. Veritone’s Q1 2025 labour market analysis notes a 0.8% quarterly rise in median AI role salaries to R2.82 million, reflecting strong demand.

These roles show AI can complement human skills, fostering jobs in managing and improving AI systems. Some operations, like invoice processing and warehouse logistics at UiPath and Amazon, rely heavily on AI, as noted in a Datamation analysis from 13 May 2024 and a Sendbird review from 18 April 2025. 

It should also be stressed that AI’s benefits extend beyond daily life and work, notably in space exploration, where it drives humanity’s quest to explore new frontiers. NASA’s Perseverance rover, operational since 18 February 2021, uses AI to navigate Mars’ rugged terrain autonomously, as detailed in updates from 18 April 2024.

Its AI system, AEGIS (Autonomous Exploration for Gathering Increased Science), selects and prioritises rock samples for analysis, speeding up the search for ancient microbial life.

By October 2024, Perseverance had collected 24 rock and regolith samples, plus one air sample, covering over 30 kilometres in Jezero Crater, a former lake site. 

Additionally, AI supports instruments like SHERLOC, scanning for organic compounds, and tests materials for future Mars spacesuits. NASA’s Mars Exploration Programme uses AI to process data from orbiters like the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, mapping terrain and weather. The Mars Sample Return mission, updated on 9 January 2025, relies on AI to optimise landing strategies for retrieving samples, crucial for studying Mars’ geological history and preparing for human exploration in the 2030s.

AI also supports NASA’s CHAPEA missions, launched 5 September 2025, testing AI-driven life support systems for future colonies.

Additionally, AI processes exoplanet data from telescopes like TESS, identifying habitable worlds, per NASA’s 2024 exoplanet updates, paving the way for interplanetary settlements.

Furthermore, AI also offers immense benefits in other areas. It streamlines tasks and enhances decision-making, per Tableau’s 2024 analysis. Adding to this, McKinsey’s 30 May 2024 report shows AI improves access to education and healthcare. The World Economic Forum on 26 April 2024 noted AI aids the United Nations in delivering rapid disaster relief. Google’s 2025 updates highlight AI assisting blind individuals and advancing medical research. PwC estimates AI could add R282.6 trillion to the global economy by 2030.

This means, it is not just another digital industry, but in someway our evolution in various parts of human life.

However, it risks job losses for low-skill workers and biased systems that may cause unfair outcomes, per Coursera’s 2024 report. The OECD’s 14 November 2024 report warns of uncontrolled AI dangers, though Pew Research in April 2025 found 76 per cent of experts believe benefits outweigh harms. Nature’s 2024 survey shows 75 per cent of researchers expect AI to improve lives with strong regulations.

However, concerns about AI’s catastrophic potential, termed the “doomsday” view, are gaining attention. Experts warn that artificial general intelligence (AGI) could pose severe risks. A Politico article from 2 September 2025 describes Stanford’s Jacquelyn Schneider’s experiments, where AI models like GPT-4 and Claude 2 escalated war games aggressively, even suggesting nuclear weapon use. “The AI is always playing Curtis LeMay,” Schneider noted, highlighting its tendency to favour escalation.

Building on this, the AI Impacts 2023 survey, released 25 January 2024, found 2,788 AI researchers estimated a 5% chance of AI-driven human extinction by 2100, with a 10 per cent risk of severe disempowerment.

A RAND report from 6 May 2025 assessed AI’s potential to cause extinction via nuclear weapons, pathogens, or geoengineering, noting risks are plausible but hard to quantify. The IMD AI Safety Clock, set to 29 minutes to midnight on 4 November 2024, warns of uncontrolled AGI dangers.

But you must remember, a Nature editorial from 27 June 2023 argues doomsday scenarios fuel tech competition, risking an AI arms race and sidelining issues like bias and misinformation. A University of Zurich study from 23 April 2025 found people prioritise immediate AI risks over existential threats, urging a balanced approach.

Despite the concerns and looking at the benefits, in South Africa, AI adoption is robust but lags behind countries like the US. A University World News article from 30 June 2025 reports 93% of South African businesses use AI, exceeding the global 88%, though investment is lower. 

Mastercard’s 5 August 2025 report values Africa’s AI market at R81.18 billion, with South Africa leading via its 2024 National AI Policy Framework, per The AI Innovator.

Compared to 78% global business AI use, per Stanford’s 2024 Index, South Africa excels in finance and mining but faces digital access and skills challenges. South Africans see job shifts mirroring global trends.

PwC’s 2025 report from June 2025 notes AI-related skills growing 66% faster, with financial job postings requiring AI skills rising from 2.9% in 2021 to 3.68% in 2024. 

While data processing jobs decline, McKinsey’s 12 May 2025 analysis predicts generative AI could add R1.8 trillion to African economies, creating roles in AI oversight and ethical auditing. The World Economic Forum in 2024 highlights AI formalising informal jobs, aiding South Africa’s gig economy, with SAP training two-thirds of African firms by 4 August 2025. AI also improves healthcare diagnostics and farming yields, potentially adding R940 billion to manufacturing by 2030, per ODI’s 4 August 2025 report.

For South Africans, AI’s growth presents both challenges and opportunities, impacting jobs, healthcare, farming, and daily life. While job losses and potential biases raise concerns, South Africa’s strong adoption of AI positions it to lead in Africa, provided the country address skills shortages and digital divides to ensure everyone benefits.

Taking this into account, South Africans need coordinated efforts from government, businesses, and schools to equip people with skills for new roles and establish clear AI regulations.
