According to SAWS, a cut-off low-pressure system extending to the surface will position itself over the central interior of South Africa on Monday, while a high-pressure system to the east will drive an onshore flow.

This combination is expected to trigger isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms across KwaZulu-Natal, with some intensifying into severe storms in the western parts of the province. These storms are likely to bring heavy downpours, damaging winds, frequent lightning, and hail.

The towns expected to face the most severe conditions include Newcastle, Dannhauser, Ladysmith, Utrecht, Vryheid, Dundee, Msinga, Nkandla, Nongoma, Nquthu, Ulundi, Pongola, Mthonjaneni, eDumbe, Hlabisa, and Indaka.

These thunderstorms pose multiple risks to communities. Impacts may include flooding of roads, bridges, and both formal and informal settlements.

Hail could damage homes, vehicles, and infrastructure, while fast-flowing streams and rivers may endanger lives. SAWS also warned of possible road closures, blockages, and significant travel disruptions.

In response, residents are urged to remain indoors and avoid travel during the storms. SAWS cautioned against attempting to cross rivers or streams where water exceeds ankle height. The weather service further advised: “If people do find themselves trapped in a vehicle during a flood, they should abandon their vehicle and move to higher ground.”

Furthermore, the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (KZNCoGTA) has confirmed that disaster management teams across all affected municipalities are on high alert, monitoring conditions closely to ensure quick responses.

The forecast severe weather highlights the need for vigilance and preparedness.

While authorities stand ready, the responsibility also falls on residents to heed official warnings, exercise caution, and take proactive steps to protect themselves and their families.
