According to SAWS, isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms are forecast for most areas in KZN on Saturday, 6 September 2025.

Some of these storms could become severe, with intense lightning, strong winds, and small hail expected to hit select areas. The severe weather is likely to begin in the afternoon and continue into the night, possibly lasting until midnight.

SAWS warns that these storms may cause:

  • Localised damage to infrastructure and informal settlements
  • Dangerous road conditions, including slippery surfaces and reduced visibility
  • Disruption on gravel and dirt roads
  • Structural damage to mud-based homes

The following towns are expected to be affected by the severe thunderstorms:

  • Newcastle
  • Ladysmith
  • Estcourt
  • Dannhauser
  • Dundee
  • Utrecht
  • Mooi River
  • Giants Castle
  • Bergville
  • Indaka
  • Sobabili

With these risks in mind, residents in affected towns are urged to:

  • Avoid outdoor activities and remain indoors during storm activity
  • Stay away from windows and ensure that pets, livestock, and vehicles are safely secured
  • Avoid driving in low-lying areas where flash flooding or sinkholes may occur

The South African Weather Service also stresses the importance of staying updated through official weather channels and reliable news sources. Real-time updates can help residents respond quickly to changing conditions and prevent unnecessary risk.
