A collision occurred along the R34 on Thursday morning, 27 February 2025, when a taxi transporting children crashed head-on into a light motor vehicle, marking a deeply unsettling moment. The accident left 24 individuals injured and resulted in one tragic loss of life.

The incident unfolded shortly after 7 am, when a motorist passing the scene spotted the wreckage and dialled emergency services. Responders arrived promptly and established that the taxi and the car had collided head-on.
Road Angels South Africa pointed out that the Vryheid-to-Bloodriver road is known for its extensive potholes. Road Angels South Africa explained that the taxi driver, travelling toward Vryheid to take the children to school, had reportedly swerved to dodge one of the larger craters on the roadway. In that critical maneuverer, the taxi struck the light motor vehicle which was driving from Vryheid at the time.
The toll included 24 injuries: one person in critical condition, five with serious wounds, and 17 sustaining minor injuries. Craig Botha, spokesperson for KwaZulu-Private Ambulance, added, “Sadly, one patient had sustained fatal injuries and passed away before emergency services could reach the scene.”
With authorities now set to probe the precise circumstances behind this collision, Road Angels South Africa has issued vital advice for drivers navigating hazardous roads. “Slow down when travelling on routes that are in bad condition. Furthermore, stay in your lane when you are swerving out for potholes, and make sure there’s no oncoming traffic.”

In the aftermath of this profound tragedy, Newcastillian News extends its sincere condolences to the loved ones of the deceased.
