More than a year after surviving a chilling ordeal, Kiran Sewanarayan, the CEO of Aisure Group and a prominent figure in Ladysmith’s business community, remains in pursuit of justice following a kidnapping, severe assault, and an attempted murder by a group of foreign nationals.
The terrifying sequence of events unfolded in the early hours of 12 January 2024, as reported by Newcastillian News.
Sewanarayan was at home when he was confronted by roughly 20 individuals demanding entry. Upon his refusal, the group broke into his residence, ambushed him, and forcibly took him to Dannhauser. There, in a desolate field, he was subjected to a vicious attack and left for dead by his assailants who believed their heinous act had succeeded.
Hawks Spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Simphiwe Mhlongo revealed the grim details of the assault, noting that the attackers used hockey sticks to inflict their violence, leaving Sewanarayan critically injured until a passerby’s intervention led to his hospitalisation.
A development in the case occurred on 15 May 2024, with the arrest of three suspects, Irfan Ullah Khan (40), Saif Ullah (49), and Ali Rao Raza (22), as confirmed by the Newcastle Serious Organised Crime Investigation (Hawks).
The trios’ charges include kidnapping, assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm, malicious damage to property, and attempted murder. The arrests took place in Newcastle.

Despite the initial court proceedings starting in May 2024 at the Ladysmith Regional Court, the path to justice has been fraught with delays. Scheduled for a pre-trial on 20 January 2025, the case was postponed yet again, this time until 20 February 2025. It should be noted that Khan has said to be released on bail.
Expressing frustration, Sewanarayan has critiqued the judicial process, particularly the decision to grant bail, saying, “It is not fair on anyone as it was a serious crime and there were 20 people involved, and only three have been arrested so far.”
Moreover, he noted that the slow course of the legal proceedings has also placed strain on him and his family, due to him having to worry whether or not the suspects would face the full might of the law or potentially get off Scott-free.
As Sewanarayan continues his wait for justice, the case serves as a stark reminder of the challenges within the legal system.
