The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a critical alert regarding anticipated disruptive rainfall across significant regions of the province.

According to SAWS, this could lead to potential flooding, compromised road safety, and damage to infrastructure.

SAWS has identified the following areas as particularly vulnerable to severe impacts:

  • Kokstad
  • The Msunduzi
  • eThekwini
  • KwaDukuza
  • Mkhambathini
  • Ndwedwe
  • Umdoni

While Newcastle and Ladysmith are expected to largely avoid the brunt of this weather event, both locales can anticipate further showers throughout the day.

In response, the Newcastle Municipality has closed Umfolozi Road, which traverses past Amcor Dam, due to flooding. Traffic officials are vigilantly overseeing the area, guiding motorists towards alternative routes. Moreover, local emergency services in Newcastle have urged residents to prepare for possible flooding in susceptible zones.

Residents are being encouraged to formulate a comprehensive action plan for their homes, which includes flood mitigation tactics like deploying sandbags and knowing how to disconnect electrical systems, alongside evacuation protocols.

Furthermore, over the weekend, several areas in the town experienced severe weather disruptions, including extensive flooding on numerous roads late on Friday night, 10 January 2024, and lightning strikes damaging trees and cellphone towers.

With additional rain expected, the Municipality advises motorists to exercise heightened caution, steering clear of flooded roads and those obstructed by fallen trees.

Community members are encouraged to report any incidents of flooding or emergencies to their ward councillors or directly to the local disaster management team at 079 442 4489.
