Following two years of rigorous police investigations and court proceedings, 28-year-old Skhumbuzo Goodenough Nkabinde and 29-year-old Sibusiso Thembinkosi Buthelezi are now set to spend decades behind bars for the brutal and senseless murder of Mr Hlatshwayo, the former principal of Zabalaza Primary School.

Amajuba District SAPS Spokesperson, Constable Nonjabulo Langa, explained that the two men were apprehended after they mercilessly gunned down Mr Hlatshwayo in his own home, in front of his wife and children, during a house robbery in August 2022 that spiralled into a horrific tragedy.
“Following the tragic incident, a case of house robbery and murder was opened and assigned to Sergeant Sibusiso Xolani Kunene. Investigations began immediately, with police officials searching for and arresting the two suspects. After taking them into custody, the investigating officer did not leave a stone unturned to ensure that justice prevailed,” explained Constable Langa.
Through relentless investigations into the murder of the respected school principal, Constable Langa stated that Sergeant Kunene, a dedicated member of the Amajuba District Detective Task Team, was able to gather substantial evidence connecting both men to the murder and house robbery. She further highlighted that Sergeant Kunene’s exceptional investigative work produced such compelling evidence that the court was persuaded to deny the accused bail throughout the legal process until the day of sentencing.
With justice firmly served, Constable Langa confirmed that the Madadeni High Court recently handed down the sentences that would ensure the two men are no longer able to wreak havoc on society.
According to Constable Langa, Nkabinde was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder and an additional 15 years for house robbery. Buthelezi, on the other hand, received a total of 28 years for murder, along with an additional 15-year sentence for his role in the robbery.

The sentencing marks the end of a heartbreaking chapter for Mr Hlatshwayo’s family, friends, and colleagues, as well as the wider community, who have been left reeling from the shocking loss of a beloved educator and leader.
As the two men now face the full consequences of their actions, what are your thoughts on this outcome?
