According to Amajuba District SAPS, a security guard from a Newcastle based security company is now facing attempted murder charges after allegedly playing a role in the assault and torture of a 58-year-old man.
The ordeal unfolded on Saturday, 16 November 2024, in an open field near Vulintaba.
As per the reports, the elderly man was approached by two men, one of whom is employed by a well-known security company. While Newcastillian News is aware of the company’s name, it is being withheld due to ongoing police investigations.
Furthermore, the two men allegedly accused the victim of stealing two rolls of fencing wire. Before he could comprehend what was happening, they reportedly handcuffed him, placed a plastic bag over his head, and repeatedly struck him with a baton. The torture is said to have lasted for an unspecified period, leaving the man physically injured and deeply traumatised.
Despite the ordeal, the victim managed to make his way to Newcastle SAPS, where he opened a case against his alleged assailants before seeking medical attention.
As investigations continue, the Spokesperson for the Amajuba District SAPS, Constable Nonjabulo Langa, has strongly condemned acts of vigilantism. “Any form of vigilantism is unlawful as everyone has constitutional rights, and if these rights are infringed upon, for example through assault, legal steps can and will be taken against the perpetrator. Police are not even allowed to assault people, and while some might feel vigilantism makes areas safer, it is advisable to rather combat crime by working alongside the SAPS, or through one of the crime-fighting organisations such as the CPF,” said Constable Langa.
As the two men now face the consequences of their actions, what are your thoughts on the above?
