A routine police patrol in Barry Hertzog Park quickly escalated into a harrowing incident when an officer discovered the aftermath of a violent crime, involving the kidnapping of a young woman and the shooting of her partner.
According to information verified by the Newcastle SAPS Spokesperson, Lizzy Arumugam, the incident occurred in the early hours of Friday morning, 11 October 2024, at approximately 3 am.
The officer patrolling the suburb was approached at the corner of DF Malan Avenue and Frikkie Meyer Avenue by a visibly shaken man in desperate need of assistance.
The man recounted a terrifying encounter: he and his girlfriend were walking together when they were suddenly confronted by three unknown assailants. Without warning, one of the men brandished a firearm, thrusting the couple into a nightmare. The attackers robbed the stunned man of his possessions before brutally shooting him in the leg and forcibly abducting his girlfriend.
As of now, four days have passed since the incident, and the young woman remains missing.
As per the SAPS, police officials are tirelessly working around the clock, determined to bring her home safely and apprehend those responsible for this heinous act. Arumugam confirmed that the Newcastle SAPS have launched a case encompassing attempted murder, armed robbery, and kidnapping, signalling the gravity of the situation.
While specific details of the investigation cannot be disclosed due to the sensitive nature of the case, Arumugam has reassured the public that thorough investigations are underway, with a firm commitment to ensuring that justice prevails.
Therefore, anyone with information on the crime and the suspects is urged to come forward to the Newcastle SAPS immediately, to ensure the perpetrators are brought to book and the safe return of the woman.

Face reality our Town is crumbling with no site of maintenance, bylaws infringements , lawlessness, but we as community bare the brant . Pick pay closing, is not good sign. Law enforcement in this town is comprised. Capture of businesses owned by state and municipalities staff ,will never create employment, even in country.
