The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued an alert concerning a heatwave and high humidity expected to grip large parts of the country from Friday, 11 October 2024, through Monday, 14 October 2024.

This warning specifically applies to regions in north-western KwaZulu-Natal, including Newcastle and Ladysmith, as well as parts of the Free State, North West, and Gauteng.

With these scorching conditions anticipated, AccuWeather has provided a detailed forecast for the weekend ahead, indicating that residents should prepare for extreme weather.

Friday, 11 October 2024:

Newcastle: Expect a blistering day filled with lots of sunshine. Temperatures are expected to reach a staggering 35°. An unhealthy UV reading of 11 is also forecast, prompting warnings for individuals to limit their time outdoors. As night falls, temperatures are predicted to cool to around 13°.

Ladysmith: An even hotter day is on the horizon, with highs forecast to hit 36°. Accompanied by a UV reading of 11, the extreme heat may pose serious risks for anyone engaging in outdoor activities. Evening temperatures will dip to approximately 15°.

Dundee: The forecast for Dundee is similarly grim, with expected temperatures climbing to 35° and a UV index of 11. Residents are strongly advised against engaging in strenuous outdoor activities. As the day ends, temperatures will cool slightly to around 14°.

Saturday, 12 October 2024:

Newcastle: Another sweltering day is expected, with temperatures forecast to peak at 35° and the UV index remaining at an unhealthy 11. The evening will bring some relief, with temperatures dropping to about 14°.

Ladysmith: The oppressive heat continues, with forecasts predicting a high of 35° and a constant UV index of 11. Evening temperatures are expected to settle at 14°.

Dundee: Dundee will see sunny skies and extreme temperatures soaring to 33°, coupled with a UV index of 11. Evening temperatures are forecast to decrease to around 13°.

Sunday, 13 October 2024:

Newcastle: The final day of the weekend promises more scorching heat. Temperatures are set to reach 35° and the UV index again hitting 11. Nighttime may bring a slight cooling, with temperatures expected to drop to 15°.

Ladysmith: A blazing hot day is on the cards, with highs anticipated at 36°. The UV index remains dangerously high at 11. Evening temperatures are predicted to drop to 14°.

Dundee: The heat persists, with temperatures forecast to reach 34°. Once again, residents should avoid strenuous activities outdoors, with an accompanying UV index of 11. Evening temperatures will cool to 14°.

In light of this heatwave, Newcastle, Ladysmith, and Dundee residents are urged to take precautionary measures to safeguard their health.

The Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) has recommended that individuals stay well-hydrated by drinking plenty of water, avoid strenuous outdoor activities, and seek shade when outside. Wearing protective clothing, such as sunglasses, loose-fitting long-sleeved shirts, and hats, is also advised.

Furthermore, COGTA emphasised the importance of ensuring that pets are well-hydrated and have access to shaded areas. Additionally, residents are encouraged to check on vulnerable individuals with pre-existing health conditions to ensure their well-being.
