Adding urgency to this forecast, the Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (KZNCOGTA) has issued warnings about severe weather expected to impact large parts of KZN from Friday, 20 September, to Saturday, 21 September.
KZNCOGTA explained that the South African Weather Service has issued a Level 6 warning for disruptive snow across parts of the uThukela, Harry Gwala, and uMgungundlovu Districts. These conditions are dangerous and could lead to temporary road closures due to ice accumulation, disrupting traffic on major routes.
Residents in affected areas are strongly advised to take precautions and consider delaying unnecessary travel, as the risk of becoming stranded due to icy roads is significant. It’s important to note that the uThukela District encompasses Ladysmith, Indaka, Umtshezi, Okhlamba, and Imbabazane.
Furthermore, a Level 2 disruptive snow warning is also in effect for areas within the Amajuba, Ugu, uThukela, uMgungundlovu, and Harry Gwala Districts. As readers know, Newcastle, Utrecht, and Dannhauser all fall under the Amajuba District.
With such severe weather on the horizon, KZNCOGTA has assured residents that disaster management teams, coordinated by the Provincial Disaster Management Centre, are ready to respond to emergencies and provide assistance as needed.
Plans are underway to clear roads in collaboration with local municipalities and the Department of Transport, ensuring major routes remain accessible and any disruptions are promptly addressed.
