Severe thunderstorm warning issued for numerous KZN towns

Disaster teams prepare for floods and storms as SAWS issues warnings

Newcastillians, the South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Level 2 Warning for Severe Thunderstorms set to strike on Monday, 15 September 2024. The approaching storm system is forecast to bring a day of extreme weather, and residents across the province are urged to prepare.

Set to begin at around 11 am, the thunderstorms are expected to roll across KwaZulu-Natal, lasting until 11 pm, impacting numerous towns.

SAWS has predicted that the central and northern parts of the province will experience the most severe weather, with the potential for scattered to widespread showers turning into intense storms.

The incoming weather event is expected to bring damaging winds, excessive lightning, and heavy downpours. These could cause dangerous conditions that could result in the following localised impacts:

Expected Impacts:

  • Severe damage to infrastructure, vehicles, homes, and livestock. 
  • Flooding on vulnerable roads, making travel hazardous. 
  • Injuries or even loss of life due to lightning strikes. 
  • Power surges from excessive lightning.

As the threat looms, SAWS urges communities to take immediate precautions. Avoid travelling on bridges or low-lying roads, which are at risk of flooding or possible sinkholes. Stay indoors, as outdoor activities under these conditions may lead to injuries from lightning, hail, or floodwaters.

Safety Precautions:

  • Stay indoors if possible and keep well away from windows.
  • Ensure pets are sheltered, and secure livestock and vehicles in safe areas. 
  • Be prepared for flying debris that could cause further damage.
