Following rapid and decisive action, an armed robber targeting unsuspecting Newcastillians near Scott and Kirkland Street found his criminal ambitions abruptly cut short.
The incident, which unfolded on the afternoon of Wednesday, 28 August 2024, saw law enforcement intervene after receiving alarming reports of a man using a firearm to rob pedestrians in the area.
Newcastle’s Crime Fighter Task Team member, Imran Ghafoor, shared how the team immediately responded, arriving at the scene to assess the situation. The suspect, who was lying in wait in the open veld between the roads, was identified, and it was confirmed that he was armed.
Recognising the imminent danger, the team called for urgent backup.
In a show of united force, reinforcements arrived within minutes, including the Amajuba District Drug Team, Newcastle Municipal traffic officer, Nico Moolman, Barnard Security, AfriForum, RESSEC Security, and Ithemba Security, all determined to apprehend the suspect.
Describing the moment of arrest, Marius Smith of Barnard Security said, “The suspect had no chance to escape, with Warrant Officer RA Singh and Imran Ghafoor tackling him, ensuring that he was surrounded.”
After the suspect was caught, Ghafoor noted that the man was charged with attempted robbery and the pointing of a firearm. However, Ghafoor added a surprising twist to the story by saying, “It was later discovered that the firearm was a gas gun.”
As the investigation continues, Ghafoor mentioned that efforts are underway to determine if the suspect is linked to other crimes in the area.
Moreover, Smith commended the collaborative efforts of the security teams, emphasising that such partnerships are crucial in the ongoing fight against crime and armed robberies in Newcastle, ultimately ensuring a safer community.
Despite these successful efforts, Wayne Brand of AfriForum Newcastle’s Neighbourhood Watch noted that while crime levels in town vary, robberies in the lower CBD remain a significant concern, urging community members to stay vigilant.
Brand also highlighted a troubling issue: many residents are not reporting crimes by opening cases.
“People will get robbed, and the suspect will be caught, but people will then choose not to open a case, and this will result in the suspect being released,” Brand explained. Therefore, he urged Newcastillians to take legal action, as it is essential to holding criminals accountable and making Newcastle a safer place for all.
