In December 2021, Newcastillian News reported on the theft of a shotgun and an R5 rifle with ammunition from the Newcastle K9 Unit. At the time, Newcastle SAPS spokesperson Lizzy Arumugam explained that the theft occurred between 16 September 2021 and 20 September 2021.

While details of the theft remained undisclosed by the police, Arumugam confirmed that District Detectives were investigating the case.

However, with investigations still underway, have the missing firearms been recovered?
After nearly three years of investigation, Arumugam confirmed that only one firearm, the shotgun, had been recovered, with efforts ongoing to trace the missing R5 rifle. Additionally, Arumugam could not divulge who was involved or confirm/deny any police involvement, stating, “Currently, the case is under investigation.”
Furthermore, Arumugam highlighted that the Newcastle K9 Unit had implemented stringent measures to prevent further firearm losses. “Regular inspections and daily inspections of firearms at the unit are being conducted,” assured Arumugam.
