Motorists using the P30, the main road connecting Ladysmith and Bergville, are in for some significant changes in the coming months.

This development comes as Sipho Hlomuka, the KwaZulu-Natal MEC for Transport, Community Safety and Liaison, officially introduced the contractor for the resealing of Main Road P30 in Bergville, located in the Okhahlamba Local Municipality, on Wednesday, 23 May 2024.
The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Transport highlighted that Main Road P30 is a vital link between Ladysmith and Bergville, falling within the Okhahlamba Local Municipality under the uThukela District Municipality. According to the Department, the appointed contractor will embark on a comprehensive project to reseal the entire road, aiming to provide a much smoother and safer drive for all motorists and commuters who depend on this route.

Explaining the scope of the work, the KZN Department of Transport noted, “The reseal of Main Road P30 entails the repair of base and surface defects and the reseal of the entire road surface using a double seal. This section is approximately 34.40 kilometres long, located between N3 (Ladysmith/Bergville off-ramp) and P30/P340 Intersection (Bergville Town).”
While the exact start date and project timeline have not been disclosed, the initiative is expected to kick off soon, with a substantial investment backing it.
The Department stated, “The total estimated project cost is R276 million with more than 70 employment opportunities to be created. Emerging local contractors are also set to benefit from this multi-million project.”
