Two people sustained critical injuries on Thursday, 18 April 2024, when the car they were travelling in crashed along the R33 and went over a bridge, opposite the Battlefield Caravan Park in Dundee.
Shanawaaz Sayed from Rescue 101 Dundee Towing provided details, explaining that the crash occurred when the driver of the Toyota Hilux swerved to avoid a large pothole on the road.
Unfortunately, being unfamiliar with the route, this manoeuvre led to disastrous consequences. “He lost control of the vehicle and crashed down the bridge opposite Battlefield Caravan Park,” said Sayed.
Upon receiving the report of the accident, Road Angels South Africa dispatched local first responders to the scene. Emergency personnel discovered that one occupant had been ejected from the vehicle, while the driver remained trapped inside. The Dundee Fire and Rescue Unit was then called to extricate the trapped individual.
Despite both victims sustaining critical injuries, Sayed mentioned that they were transported to the hospital and were currently in stable condition.
In the aftermath of the incident, motorists are advised to exercise caution, especially on unfamiliar routes and during long-distance journeys. Share your thoughts on the incident in the comments below.

I drive that road every now and then, and it is dangerous. The potholes at certain places have merged to become large patches with no tarred surface. On the stretch between Dundee and Vryheid, there are in excess of 200 potholes. Many of these are big and deep enough to cause extensive damage to your vehicle. A speed of 60-80km/h is advised with night driving being out of the question. Maintain a good following distance. Extra caution is advised when overtaking another vehicle.
