Exciting developments are underway at the former Monte Vista Casino premises in Barry Hertzog Park as the Newcastle Municipality initiates a much-anticipated renovation project, poised to elevate the city’s sporting landscape.
The endeavour marks a pivotal step towards transforming the Monte Vista Casino Sport Facility into a cutting-edge hub for sports and wellness.
According to insights from the Newcastle Municipality’s Communications Unit, the revamped facility is poised to accommodate diverse sporting codes, fostering a culture of health and athleticism among Newcastle residents, particularly the youth.
“The revitalisation of this facility will not only benefit residents but will also contribute immensely to the development of young talent by granting access to local schools to host sports days and other activities,” remarked the Communications Unit.
Moreover, fitness enthusiasts will gain access to the outdoor gym, while event organisers can utilise designated spaces within the facility for private functions such as year-end parties, weddings, tournaments, and social gatherings.
The project will unfold in two distinct phases, Phase 1A and Phase 1B. The construction work of Phase 1A, was awarded to Mela Okuhle Enterprises, and their work officially began on 22 November 2022 and ended on 22 September 2023.
Key highlights of Phase 1A include the following:
- Installation of 2.4m High Clear Vu Fence
- Installation of New Sliding Vehicular Gates X6
- Demolition of existing structures
- Bulk Earthworks
- Construction of Proposed Guard House x1
- Construction of Portal Culvert Channel
- Storm Water Drainage
- Sewer Drainage
- Construction of Change Room & Toilets
- Installation of irrigation system, pump, and storage tanks
- Installation of soccer fields grassing
- Construction of 7-a-side pitch
- Construction of two combo courts
- Construction of an outdoor gym
- Six steel grandstands
- Electrical works to building
- Walkways and ramps
Moreover, Phase 1B, undertaken by Msalela Transport cc, began on 6 September 2023, with an anticipated completion date of 6 December 2024. This phase encompasses a wide array of developments, which includes the following:
- Establishment
- Clearing and grubbing
- Parking Rehabilitation
- Rugby field
- Cricket field
- Hockey court
- Outdoor gym
- Construction of changeroom and ablution facility
- Tennis court
- Three guard houses
- Main guardhouse
- Construction of 7-a-side pitch
- Skateboard Park
- Steel grandstands
- Outdoor indigenous games
- Vending stalls
- Bulk electricity reticulation
- BMX track area
- Walkways and ramps
Furthermore, the Communications Unit noted the ongoing transformation at the Monte Vista Facility not only bolsters the local economy but also generates employment opportunities, aligning with Newcastle Municipality’s overarching goal of fostering growth and prosperity.
Describing the project as a beacon of hope for Newcastle, Mayor Cllr Xolani Dube emphasised the transformative power of sports in combating societal challenges.
“Sport is the only efficient tool we can use to fight against the scourge of violence, drug abuse, and criminality. Our youth will now spend more time nurturing their talents and building their future,” affirmed Mayor Dube.

Will there be 2x seven a side facilities…… I see there was one noted down for each tender/vendor?
I understand the importance of sport and recreation, but I think that current infrastructure (lights, water, roads and cutting of grass on verges and in green spaces, weed control on roads and pavements) also needs to be up to date and consistently maintained.
