Determined to propel Newcastle towards regaining its esteemed title of Cleanest Town of the Year, dedicated volunteers from New City Newcastle took on the morning heat this past Saturday, 9 December 2023, to enhance a local park situated on Rooibok Avenue.
The enthusiastic team, stationed near Pick ‘n Pay in Hutten Heights, embarked on a mission to revive neglected park equipment.
Additionally, volunteers undertook the task of trimming the grass at the play park located at Singel and Kloof streets, along with the greenery surrounding Palm Park on Impala Drive.
These initiatives mark the latest in a series of projects orchestrated by the group to elevate the aesthetic and environmental appeal of Newcastle. A recent endeavour involved the painting of a faded speed hump along Impala Drive, enhancing its visibility for motorists.
Gustav van der Linde, from New City Newcastle, expressed their focus on maintenance and renovation during the festive season. He disclosed plans to strategically place refuse bins in various locations, ensuring a cleaner environment. Van der Linde also teased the launch of exciting projects in the coming year, including collaborative efforts with the Lottoland Help n Dorp TV programme, broadcast on DSTV.
The Lottoland Help n’ Dorp (Help a Town) initiative represents Lottoland’s commitment to community development in small towns across South Africa.
The program involves a dedicated team visiting towns, interacting with residents, and turning their aspirations for community improvement into reality. Importantly, the initiative provides funding of up to R500,000 to support these dreams.
Meticulous planning is underway for this collaborative venture, with a committee set to be established on 18 January 2024. Once formed, the committee will initiate steps to engage with Lottoland Help n Dorp, with the potential for Newcastle to be showcased on television if the community driven project gains acceptance from Lottoland.

The fear is that it hides the true level of failure of the local government. Let the rot be shown.
