Operation Basadi: Roadblocks and foot patrols hit Newcastle

Newcastle experienced a significant surge of law enforcement personnel on Thursday, 31 August 2023Police officers, in conjunction with officials from Newcastle Correctional Services, immigration officers from Home Affairs, and members of a local security company, united with a common goal of upholding justice within the community.

Lieutenant Colonel Phindile Hadebe of Amajuba District SAPS provided insight into the heightened activity in Newcastle, attributing it to Operation Basadi. This innovative endeavour places female officials at the forefront of promoting law enforcement within the community.

She emphasised that since August was Women’s Month, this saw the team of officials participating in the project determined to paint Newcastle’s roads blue and brown. These colours signify the officials’ respective uniforms.”

Throughout Thursday, the team of officials executed two simultaneous roadblocks in key locations within Newcastle. One operation took place at the N11 entrance to Newcastle at Hilldrop, while the other was conducted on Albert Wessels Drive. Following the roadblocks, officials continued their presence by patrolling the central business district.

Discussing the operation, Lieutenant Colonel Hadebe said, “We focused on theft of motor vehicles, illegal firearms, stock theft, suspected stolen property, and illegal immigrants. We also did stop and searches.””

Amajuba District SAPS Commissioner General Fred Alexander further elaborated that alongside these priorities, the officials remained vigilant against the potential threat of human trafficking within Newcastle’s borders.

As the local law enforcement agencies fervently dedicated themselves to the initiative, General Alexander underscored the paramount importance of such comprehensive operations for the community.  “We need to mobilise so people can see things are happening,” said General Alexander.”
