Following up on Gerrie Hugo, a Newcastillian who received the devastating news of a Stage 4 melanoma (skin cancer) diagnosis in November 2021.

Newcastillian News initially shed light on Gerrie’s challenging journey back in May 2023, recounting his surgeries to eradicate cancer while calling on the community for support.
However, the Hugo family’s hopes were dashed when cancer resurfaced and spread into his chest, back and under both his arms.
As the exorbitant costs of life saving treatment loomed, Newcastillian News appealed to the Newcastle community for support in aiding Gerrie’s medical journey.

Over a month has passed since the plea was made, and Gerrie has now commenced his treatment, astounded by the unwavering support pouring in from the local community.
Reflecting on the tremendous assistance he received, Gerrie expressed his gratitude saying that after being published on Newcastillian News the response was overwhelming.
“The support has been tremendous, and I consider myself truly blessed.”
Since May 2023, Gerrie has undergone three radiation sessions and two rounds of chemotherapy, citing positive feedback from his doctor. “The doctor is pleased with my progress and recent blood results, as my cancer count has dropped a bit,” Gerrie revealed.
However, despite these encouraging signs, he acknowledged that further treatments were in the pipeline, with medical professionals strategising the next steps.
Reflecting on his medical journey to combat cancer, Gerrie admitted that the journey had been far from easy. “Some days are good, but some days are a struggle,” he confided.
Grateful for the support he has received from his family and employers throughout this trying period, Gerrie remains resilient, taking each day as it comes.
In a continued display of support, Kilbarchen Golf Club organised a fundraising event on Saturday, June 24, 2023, to contribute to Gerrie’s mounting medical bills.
The golf day saw 68 participants take to the fairways, further solidifying the community’s commitment to Gerrie’s cause.

Kilbarchen Golf Club’s Dalene Hugo, who is also Gerrie’s mother, expressed her awe at the overwhelming response.
“It has been an incredible blessing. We never expected this level of support, and as a family, we are profoundly grateful for the unwavering dedication shown by everyone. We extend our heartfelt thanks,” she expressed.
With the golf day proving to be a resounding success, participants enjoying the pleasant weather while teeing off for a worthy cause, the Hugo family expressed their deep appreciation to everyone who has contributed thus far, making Gerrie’s treatment possible.
As the community’s support continues to uplift Gerrie and his family, their story serves as a testament to the power of unity and compassion.
