Taking place shortly after 1 pm on Tuesday, 24 May 2022, the men entered a cellphone store situated at entrance 3 of the Newcastle Mall.
Providing further insight, Ithemba Security’s Mornè Potgieter says, “The four suspects entered the store, produced firearms and proceeded to rob the store.”

After each robbery, the booms at the entrance to the mall come into operation but after a week or two, entry and exit to the mall is once again relaxed. Security needs to be tightened. More CCTV cameras need to be installed. Perhaps a parking permit should be issued (free for up to three hours) thus allowing controlled access to the mall. (The Midlands Mall is a good example of controlled access – parking permits/tickets are issued at all entry points.)
