Vryheid Post Office once again robbed of large sum of money

Estimated reading time: 2 minutes

Two robbers managed to escape with a large sum of cash from the Post Office in Vryheid, KwaZulu-Natal—with a similar approach to a robbery a year ago.

Providing further insight, KZN SAPS spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Nqobile Gwala, explains that on 9 April 2022, the two perpetrators managed to gain access to the premises on Church Street through the back door.

Once inside the business, the two allegedly lay in wait until the Post Office’s employees came to work. Then at 7.50 am, the two men struck, catching the employees off-guard.

“At gunpoint, they demanded safe keys, and they took an undisclosed amount of cash. They broke the glass door on their way out,” describes Lieutenant Colonel Gwala.

While the Vryheid SAPS are investigating the matter, remaining silent on the exact amount of the cash taken, sources claim that the men managed to escape with approximately R500 000 in cash.

Strangely enough, not only did the men manage to escape, eyewitnesses did not see if the suspects fled on foot or used a getaway vehicle. This after ignoring the Vryheid Post Office’s computers and only taking the cash.

It must be noted that this is the second time that the Vryheid Post Office has been robbed in a year. The last time, saw the thieves also waiting until employees had opened the doors.

Making the situation even more unnerving, the Vryheid SAPS is on the same street, mere meters away from the Post Office.

The South African Post Office’s head office was contacted for comment. However, none was forthcoming at the time of publication.
