The saga involving the Newcastle Municipality and the former Acting Municipal Manager and the SED for Community Services, Vish Govender, continues.

This follows Govender being suspended from his position and charges laid after a recent council meeting.

On 10 May 2022, the Newcastillian – Online News reported how the Labour Court had overturned the Newcastle Municipality’s previous decision to suspend Govender. At the time, the government entity was told not only to reinstate him but also to foot the hefty legal costs.

Despite the court’s ruling, during a council meeting held on Friday, 13 May 2022, the Municipality yet again suspended Govender. Going a step further this time, the Newcastle Municipality also laid criminal charges against the former Acting Municipal Manager.

Manager of the Newcastle Mayor’s Office, Melusi Ndima confirmed Govender’s suspension and that criminal charges have been laid against him.

However, Ndima pointed out that he could not elaborate on the criminal charges at this stage. “I am not at liberty to discuss the charges at the moment, as it could jeopardise the investigations, and Mr Govender is still an employee of the Newcastle Municipality.”

Moreover, as Govender is still an employee of the government entity, Ndima stressed that he could not say if Govender was put on paid or unpaid suspension.

However, looking to the future, Ndima underlined it was important for the public to realise that the Newcastle Municipality would continue focusing on the community, irrespective of Govender’s suspension.

“The institution is stable, and the community can be assured that service delivery will continue, and nothing will be impacted by the suspension,” he noted.

Ndima further emphasised that the process was instituted by Council to ensure that all allegations were investigated, ensuring the community remained the Municipality’s core focus.

The Newcastillian – Online News reached out to Vish Govender for comment, but none was forthcoming at the time of publication.

However, it must be noted, that the saga around Govender and the Newcastle Municipality has been ongoing since 2021.

To recap: In December 2021, Govender resigned from his post as Acting Municipal Manager, before withdrawing his resignation shortly afterwards.

This was followed by the Newcastle Deputy Mayor, Cllr Musa Thwala, stating that a special council meeting was to be held in January 2022, which would be focused on removing Govender.

At the time, Cllr Thwala stressed that Govender held no respect for the municipality’s leadership and continued to push his own political agenda.

  1. When an employee re-signs, there is no automatic guarantee that because he/she was employed that the job will always be perpetual. Re-signation is re-signation, therefore an employee will have to unfortunately re-apply for their post.

  2. “The institution is stable, and the community can be assured that service delivery will continue, and nothing will be impacted by the suspension,” he noted.

What service delivery is He talking about??? There’s none whatsoever….!!!!

Why, in the first place, did Vish Govender resign, only to withdraw his resignation a short while later???
