A collaboration between Harrismith and Ladysmith police led to the swift arrest of five suspects following a farm attack in the Harrismith district.
On Monday, 16 August 2021, at approximately 3.10 pm, Brigadier Motantsi Makhele explained that the 54-year-old victim claimed he was at home, working in the storeroom, when three unknown men came onto his property. “The suspects allegedly told him that they wanted to buy cattle, and he told them that he did not sell cattle.”
According to the victim, one of the suspects then pointed a firearm at the man, demanding money. They pushed him into the house, where they instructed him to open the safe. The Brigadier adds, “When they did not find money in the safe, they allegedly took the complainant’s two rifles, a cellphone, and other valuables.”
Once in possession of the firearms, the men tied the man to a chair, locked him in the house and fled the scene. Thankfully, the victim managed to untie himself, get out through a window, go to a neighbouring farm to ask for assistance, and alert the police.
Brigadier Makhele said a 72-hour activation plan was executed, and neighbouring stations and farmers were alerted. This led to the arrest of five suspects in Ladysmith and firearms being recovered.
The suspects will appear in Ladysmith Magistrate court on possession of the suspected stolen property and thereafter appear in Harrismith for house robbery.
