It would appear the South African Police Services are just as susceptible to crime as you and I—this follows an assault on police officers during an incident, resulting in the officer and her partner being relieved of their service pistols.
The ordeal occurred in Hlobane, mere kilometres away from Vryheid, and according to Colonel Thembela Mbele, the episode unfolded when a truck picking up people who work in the forest at the Mnyathi area, carrying five male occupants stopped next to a bakkie carrying equipment.
It was then that things took a horrible turn—four men jumped out of the vehicle and robbed the unsuspecting people sitting in the bakkie at gunpoint, taking six chainsaws and petrol containers.
Shortly after the suspects fled the scene of the crime, the Hlobane police were alerted, and this was when the two female officers responded to the incident, expecting to help bring the offenders to justice. However, their expectations were cut short soon after responding to the robbery.
With the suspects’ vehicle spotted in the area, the police approached, but the suspects showed no fear. Instead of fleeing, they advanced towards the officers, weapons in hand. They over-powered the two on-duty police officers and proceeded to take their service pistols.
During the ensuing scuffle between the police and the offenders, Col Mbele explains, one officer was hit with the butt of a firearm and sustained an injury to the back of the head, and was taken to the hospital afterwards for treatment.
Police are currently investigating the case and will hopefully bring these brazen criminals to justice sooner rather than later. However, the shocking reality remains, we live in a country whereby police are now being publicly threatened all the while enduring insane acts of disrespect and violence, such as this. This is hopefully not a sign of the times, but rather a reminder that the police need to intensify their standards to ensure criminals such as this band of robbers, respects the law.
