62-year-old rape victim shares feelings, following rapist’s sentencing

A 14-year-old girl’s life has changed forever after her 36-year-old teacher forced himself on her.

Following the crime, KZN SAPS spokesperson, Colonel Thembeka Mbele, explained that the educator was taken into police custody for allegedly raping the young girl while on the school premises.

The Dundee community immediately voiced their anger, protesting outside the high school, and the Dundee Mayor, Cllr Siyabonga Ndlovu, expressed his concerns about the matter.

For his bail application, the accused teacher was meant to appear before the Dundee Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 28 February 2022.

However, while the accused was expected to apply for a bail application, KZN spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority(NPA), Natasha Kara, says the case was remanded until 4 March 2022.

While the teacher finds himself set to remain behind bars for the foreseeable future, KwaZulu-Natal Social Development MEC, Nonhlanhla Khoza, said, “We are very disappointed that a teacher, who is supposed to play a parental role, abdicated his responsibility and sexually groomed a child. This crime dents the image of teachers and needs to be treated with great seriousness and ensure that the sentence reflects the gravity of the crime.”

Khoza further stressed that the teacher must not be granted bail following his behaviour. “It might happen that more children have suffered in the hands of this sex pest teacher,” she said.

While a legal battle is now underway, Khoza has dispatched a team of social workers to work together with the victim, parents and school to render psycho-social support.

“It will take time for this child to forget her ordeal, but our social workers will monitor the child and her behaviour to ensure that she performs well in her studies. We will only win the war against sexual abuse and gender-based violence when we work together,” she concluded.
