We asked Newcastillians their thoughts on the Mayor being released on bail

Newcastillian

Newcastle Mayor Cllr Dr Ntuthuko Mahlaba is out on bail of R20 000. This follows a bail application made at Madadeni Magistrate’s Court this morning, April 1.

He is facing charges of murder, attempted murder and two counts of conspiracy to commit murder.

Cllr Dr Mahlaba is apparently linked to the murder of ex-ANC Youth League member, Wandile Ngobeni who was assassinated in 2016, as well as allegedly being linked to the attempted murder of another member.

His bail conditions involve him reporting to Newcastle Police Station on a weekly basis until his next court appearance at Madadeni Magistrate’s Court on April 30.

With Cllr Dr Mahlaba out on bail and still technically Newcastle Municipality’s mayor, what does the Newcastle community have to say about the situation?

Thandeka Sithole

“We do not know the full truth whether he is really involved in these crimes or not. It is up to the courts to decide and let justice run its course.”

Richard Jojo

“Whether he is guilty or innocent, the court must run this case with due diligence as it is a high-profile case. However, I do feel he needs to be replaced. The Newcastle mayor represents the town, and this is a bad image for the community as a whole.

Tasmia Moodley

“I am not happy about Cllr Mahlaba being released on bail, as this is a serious crime. He must remain behind bars until the case is finalised.”
