Communication Zone, a local business situated on Voortrekker Street, Newcastle, recently fell victim to an armed robbery. This resulted in two suspects fleeing with a large sum of money.
Newcastle police spokesperson Lizzy Arumugam explains that the incident occurred on 18 February 2022.
“The complainant alleged that he was alone in the shop when he was threatened with a firearm by an unknown African male pretending to be a customer. The complainant was taken to the rear of the shop and his hands and legs were tied with sellotape.”
According to Arumugam, while the victim was in the back of the shop with the suspect, another perpetrator stood at the store’s entrance and robbed three customers of their cash as they entered the premises.
They appear to have successfully robbed all three customers of R33 000. Arumugam claims that R62 799 in cash was stolen from the shop.
