Residents in FW Beyers Avenue, Barry Hertzog Park, Newcastle have contended with a large portion of the road and pavement flooding in sewage. The damage to the road resulted from an unfinished repair job that started earlier this year.
On 29 January 2022, the Newcastle Municipality issued a public notice on its Facebook page, informing residents of power supply interruptions in the Barry Hertzog Park area. According to the post, the reasoning for this was due to a sewer pipe replacement.
While the estimated completion time was earmarked at 2 pm the same day, the area, now over a week later, still requires serious attention.
Not only has the work been halted, leaving residents gagging for fresh air, the repair work is also affecting traffic flow. Additionally, pedestrians have to walk on the road or through the “muddy” sewage on the pavement—a significant health risk.
With a 12-day delay, the question now is, what is going on?
In response, Newcastle Municipality’s Speaker, Cllr Thengi Zulu, explains that the cause of the delay will need to be investigated. However, he affirms, “The current administration is focusing intensely on service delivery. Because of this, the relevant department will be contacted, and the issue will be resolved as soon as possible.”
