A fire ravaged a house in DF Malan Road, Barry Hertzog Park, this afternoon (September 17).
While it is unclear at present how the fire started, the inferno allegedly began at approximately 12 pm.
“Two of the occupants were at home, sitting outside. They noticed smoke and thought the neighbour’s house was on fire. However, when they went to investigate, they saw it was their home,” says Newcastle Fire Department Station Officer, Multitude Booi.

A young woman and a baby were in the house but escaped before the flames engulfed the home and posed a threat to their safety.
The residents sought help from neighbours, who contacted the necessary authorities. Within minutes, the fire department was in Barry Hertzog Park to extinguish the flames.
Officer Booi explains the two young men claimed the flames began in the house’s centre room. “We will investigate where it actually started and what the cause was, once it is safe to enter the house.”

Through the swift response of both the Fire Department and paramedics, no injuries were sustained.
