Newcastle Municipality‘s leadership has started the new year with a bang, suspending three senior managers.
The three managers were officially suspended on 3 January 2022 amid a barrage of allegations brought against them.
Insubordination, impersonating another staff member, submitting questionable educational credentials, and dishonesty are among the allegations.
One of the employees works in the mayor’s office as a manager, while the others work in the administration unit and the culture and amenities office.
Allegedly, the mayor’s office manager is facing accusations of issuing instructions to other municipal officials, even though he did not have the power to do so.
Other allegations include issuing instructions to the Human Resources Department and cancelling a planned roadblock during the holiday season. He lacks the authority to do either of these.
Furthermore, the administration unit official is accused of impersonating another staff member during an executive committee meeting.
The third official in the Culture and Amenities office was accused of deception. This is due to his failure to notify the executive committee of critical information when he was considered for a senior position in the unit.
As the matter is being dealt with, Municipal spokesperson Mlungisi Khumalo explains, “Unfortunately, the municipality cannot dwell on the merits of the suspensions.”
Furthermore, he adds that the municipality is unable to discuss labour-related issues or suspensions because it is a sensitive matter between employers and employees.
“In such instances the involved parties are given the space to deal with such issues internally. The media is usually informed when such matters are at a conclusive stage.”

Why is politics interfering with the running of the municipality?
People in the employ of politicians have NO right issuing orders to staff.
We are into the first week after a lekker break from work, and we need to get things moving.
This town is in a disgusting state. Infrastructure is falling apart.
Suspension WITH pay is not acceptable.
Hopefully the community will be informed of the outcome of these issues. They have a right to know.
