As the holiday season approaches, local law enforcement officers are confronted with opportunistic crimes.

Lizzy Arumugam, media liaison for Newcastle SAPS, gives us the latest rundown.

On 1 December 2021, a woman was the target of an armed robbery while stuck alongside the road with her car. The incident occurred on Madadeni Road, near KwaMathukuza.

According to Arumugam, the woman was driving down the busy road when she had to pull over because one of her car tyres had a puncture. While waiting for assistance, Arumugam says, “A black Golf stopped and two males approached her.”

However, the two men did not turn out to be the Good Samaritans she had hoped for. One armed with a knife, the two suspects proceeded to threaten the helpless woman before fleeing with jewellery and cash.

Then, on 2 December 2021, a man was walking down Hastie Street in the CBD when two men approached him. Like with the woman, the suspects were armed with a knife, used to terrorise their victim. The suspects were able to escape with the person’s cellphone.

Sadly, the two-armed robberies aren’t the only opportunistic crimes committed.

According to Arumugam, Newcastle Detectives are investigating two cases involving theft out of motor vehicles.

The first incident occurred late on 1 December 2021, on Albert Wessel Drive in Riverside Industrial. “The victim alleges that the side window of his motor vehicle was broken with an unknown instrument and entry was gained to his motor vehicle.”

The victim’s bank card and ID book and an undisclosed amount of cash was stolen. Adding to this, and moving into the CBD, on 3 December 2021, a man’s vehicle was targeted while parked on Voortrekker Street. Arumugam says the victim alleges that a grass cutter was stolen from his car.

As further police investigations into the cases mentioned above are currently underway, what are your thoughts?

Please keep a watchful eye over your neighbourhoods, and if you see a stranger loitering around your street, be sure to contact the SAPS. Remember, communities who work together flourish together.
