The threat of a nationwide shutdown is currently trending on social media. According to a WhatsApp message, a call is being issued to close all cities, highways, and major roadways on Thursday, 2 December 2021.

Moreover, the message encourages motorists from all around South Africa to join the mass action by parking their cars on the roads. This intended protest action is allegedly in response to the fuel prices increasing as of 1 December 2021.

However, Newcastillians are encouraged to remain calm, as the message has been confirmed as a hoax.

The Station Commander of Newcastle Police Station, Brigadier Leon Matthysen, emphasises that local police have not received any indication that it will take place. However, he promises that Newcastle police will continue to be vigilant.

Brigadier Jay Naicker, the KwaZulu-Natal Provincial police spokesperson, adds that the SAPS is aware of the messages circulating on social media. “An investigation is underway to determine the source of these messages.”

Naicker further stresses that the SAPS urges public members to refrain from sharing communications of such a nature on social media or WhatsApp. “If there are any serious threats the SAPS will issue a statement and post such information on its social media accounts.”
