11 dead, following multiple vehicle pile-up on R612

Tragically, eleven people lost their lives on Thursday morning, 2 September 2021, after a horrific collision on the R612, near Ixopo in Southern KwaZulu-Natal.

Media Liaison Officer at KZN Emergency Medical Services Robert McKenzie explained, “The crash involved at least three trucks, a minibus and a bakkie.”

Nine people initially suffered fatal injuries in the crash, with McKenzie explaining that paramedics treated a further 12 patients at the scene, many of whom were in critical condition.

While emergency personnel worked relentlessly to save the lives of the injured, two more people succumbed to their injuries not long afterwards.

Currently, the exact cause of the collision is unclear, but the SAPS are investigating the matter.
