Thanks to responsible people getting their children vaccinated, even criminals, a KZN mother has been reunited with her baby after the infant was kidnapped on Tuesday, 10 August 2021.

Police spokesperson, Captain Nqobile Gwala explains that the mother was discharged from the hospital after giving birth to her baby boy. Shortly afterwards, she met a woman who offered to carry the child for her.

Accepting the stranger’s offer, the trio boarded a bus from the hospital, and after stopping at Mamlambo bus station, Maphanya area, the stranger disappeared with the newborn baby. This while the mother unknowingly ate a meal. “When she made enquiries in the vicinity, she was told that a silver/grey motor vehicle picked up the woman with the baby, and drove away.”

Now with the child gone, the kidnapping was reported to the police. The Jozini Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit reached out and appealed to the community to assist with information that may help them reunite the baby with his mother.

On Thursday, 19 August 2021, a miracle happened as the infant was found. “The Provincial Communication Office received intelligence yesterday (18 August 2021) about the baby boy that was kidnapped in Jozini on 10 August 2021.” Further stating, reports came in that the suspect was in Ermelo with the baby. “The Jozini and Ermelo Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit were immediately contacted, and the information was shared with them.”

The woman was arrested while at a clinic in Ermelo, where she was trying to obtain a vaccination card for the baby. Captain Gwala says, “She was arrested by the Ermelo FCS Unit and the kidnapped baby was also found. The baby has been reunited with the mother.”

The 32-year-old suspect is expected to appear before the Ubombo Magistrates Court on Friday, 20 August 2021.
