SAPS confirmed that three trucks and a double cab bakkie were set alight on the N2, between Ermelo and Piet Retief, on Wednesday night, 4 August 2021. Unfolding at approximately 6 pm, protestors allegedly began stoning and burning the vehicles outside of Ermelo, coming in from Piet Retief.

Ermelo Police Station spokesperson Captain Carla Prinsloo explains that when reports of the incident came in, the police were in the vicinity and responded immediately. “However, three trucks had already been burned, a fourth truck was damaged and a double cab bakkie was also burned.”

She adds that no injuries were reported.

As to how the trucks were stopped, before being burned and damaged, Captain Prinsloo explains that none of the truck drivers has come forward yet to provide their statements on the incident. And as investigations continue, more information will be forth-coming in due course.

In addition, while the road was initially closed following the protest action and fire, Captain Prinsloo states the area is currently calm. “The SAPS will, however, continue to monitor the situation.”
