Coming as a shock to the country, the renowned Zulu monarch, King Goodwill Zwelithini, sadly passed away this morning, 12 March 2021.
In a statement, Prince Mangosuthu Buthelezi, IFP Founder and Traditional Prime Minister to the Zulu Monarch and Nation, explained, “It is with the utmost grief that I inform the nation of the passing of His Majesty King Goodwill Zwelithini ka Bhekuzulu, King of the Zulu Nation.”
The King’s health took a turn for the worse while in hospital, passing away in the early hours of the morning. Prince Buthelezi emphasised, “On behalf of the Royal Family, we thank the nation for your continued prayers and support in this most difficult time. May His Majesty our King rest in peace.”

Newcastle Municipality Mayor Cllr Dr Ntuthuko Mahlaba has extended his heartfelt condolences to the Royal Family, as he joins millions around the world, who are both aggrieved and saddened by the news of the King’s passing. “As a municipality, we are deeply shattered by the passing of our beloved King. Indeed, our nation is poorer today, and a gigantic tree has fallen. ‘Ngangezwe Lakhe’ will forever be remembered as a king who gallantly and passionately fought for peace throughout his years. Lala ngokuthula Hlanga Lomhlabathi.”
Furthermore, President Cyril Ramaphosa added, “This sad news comes at a time when we had all been hopeful that His Majesty was recovering well in hospital where he had been over the past few weeks.” While offering his sympathies and prayers, the President enthuses, “His Majesty will be remembered as a much-loved, visionary monarch who made an important contribution to cultural identity, national unity and economic development in KwaZulu-Natal and through this, to the development of our country as a whole.”
