Newcastle Municipality clinches two awards and local media gets pat on back

During the recent 2020 Local Government Communicators’ Awards, the Newcastle Municipality was awarded the title of Best Crisis Communicator and the title of Best Newcomer.

Despite grievances, people might have with the municipality, bringing these two awards back to Newcastle speaks volumes, as it reflects how much the Newcastle Municipality communicates with the community in comparison to other Municipalities throughout the country.

Samke Yende, the Speaker of Newcastle Municipality, says, “These awards would not be possible without Mlungisi Khumalo as the leader of the Communications Department.” However, she stresses, despite Khumalo’s impeccable skills and transforming the communications department, a further great thanks goes out to his team and the media houses in Newcastle.”

Yende emphasises, “The media has transformed the way people see the municipality. I can now walk through town and not be seen as the enemy, but rather as a member of the municipality and the community.”

Muzi Mayisela, the Acting Municipal Manager, adds he truly appreciates the effort the communications team has put into their work, forming relationships with the media, thereby ensuring there is a constant source of communication between the municipality and the community.
