A fire ravages through an open veld. The dry winter grass providing the inferno with enough fuel, as the fiery flames makes its way to a house. Facing the raging flames, the homeowner reaches for the phone to call the fire department.

However, the call to 034 312 1222, which should go directly to the Fire Department, goes unanswered. The only voice on the other side of the line states, “The number you have dialled does not exist. Please redial carefully or consult directory enquiries.”

Veld fires are most prevalent during the winter season, posing a danger to local homes and farms. Then there is the occasional household fire, which erupts from time to time. Therefore, being unable to contact the Fire Department does prove problematic.

What is the issue though? Why does the number suddenly not exist?

According to a source who wishes to remain anonymous, the lines were disconnected two months ago. “With the whole lockdown, there seems to have been some form of misunderstanding and Telkom disconnected the lines. However, the municipality’s IT team is busy sorting it out,” the source claims.

The Newcastle Municipality’s Communication Department was contacted for comment to confirm why the lines were allegedly disconnected.

Mlungisi Khumalo of the Communications Department confirmed there was a problem and the Newcastle Municipality is looking at resolving the matter.

However, in case of emergencies, the community can contact Newcastle Community and Safety’s control room at 034 328 4700.
