A woman’s life has changed in an instant, as she falls victim to a violent and horrific crime. All because she is a woman.

Over the course of the past weekend, a 25-year-old Cape Town woman was gang-raped in order “to correct” her sexuality.

Two of the suspects, aged 14 and 17, are now behind bars for their role in holding the woman captive in a shack and sodomising her. The third suspect is still at large, with police searching for his whereabouts.

Grassy Park station commander, Colonel Dawood Laing, explains the incident took place on Friday, February 28, shortly after 10pm.

At the time, the woman was walking to a shop in Lotus River when she was approached by one of the suspects, whom she knows. Laing explains that the suspect told the woman there was someone who wanted to speak to her at a house in Duiker Avenue.

Trustingly, the woman went with him. Never suspecting that her life would never be the same again.

Upon arriving at the shack, two men were inside, waiting. According to Laing, one of the teenagers put his arms around the woman, telling her that he was in the mood for sex.

He threw her on the floor, pulled off her pants and sodomised her. After he had done, his accomplices also took turns raping her, before allowing her to leave. The rape was allegedly aimed at correcting her sexuality.

In a state of shock, she ran home. However, her family were sleeping, and the traumatised woman waited until Saturday morning to report the matter. Laing said the 25-year-victim had gone to her girlfriend, who called the police.

A case was then registered, and the woman was taken to the hospital. Police then tracked two of the suspects down, while the third is still on the run. However, police do know his identity.

With police investigations underway, Laing emphasises that this rape will not go unpunished.
