Staying safe on the road while travelling this festive season

Estimated reading time: 2 minutes

This time of the year, boring adverts sprout up about road safety, with cheesy music and horrid slogans. This, however, should not stop you from taking them seriously. I mean it is only your life we are trying to save.

Planning a trip and escaping your hometown this holiday season? If so, have you checked to ensure your vehicle is ready to make the trip and all the boxes are checked from a legality point of view?

Vehicle and road safety are not just about you, it is about everyone’s safety on the road around you too. It is about taking the time to get your vehicle checked and repaired, prior to travelling.

You do not want to dampen your holiday spirit by being stuck alongside the road waiting for roadside assistance, while thousands of holidaymakers drive past waving.

By following these simple steps, you can minimise the chances of unsuspected issues while travelling this festive season.

Road & vehicle safety:

  • Get your car serviced and tyres checked. If you can’t afford a service or new tyre, then you should not be going on holiday in any case. Ignoring smooth tyres can result in worse things other than breaking down.
  • Get down to Glasfit and have those cracks and chips removed from your windscreen. The cost difference between repairing a chip and an entire windscreen should be motivation enough to get this done. If not, just note that during one of the many roadblocks this season, you will be fined for that cracked windscreen.
  • The Automobile Association suggests that motorist should stop every two hours or 200kms. In the old days you had to pack boiled eggs and hot sweet coffee in a flask, pull off on the side of the road and sit at little cement round tables. Nowadays we are spoilt for choice, with many awesome stops along our journey to take advantage of.
  • Petrol is now liquid gold; therefore why would you want to drive fast? I mean you are spending money to spend money…it makes no sense. Slow down, arrive alive and with money.
  • Use the internet! Check your route and see if the road ahead is clear or are you in for storms, hail, etc.

Have a safe journey and be safe on the roads.
