In the quest for perfection, Butokukan Newcastle is well on its way to dominate the karate world.
On June 2, six Butokukan Newcastle karateka travelled down to Pretoria. Their mission to conquer the Goju-Ryu South African All Styles Karate Challenge. With their teaching in traditional Okinawan karate, the karateka were determined to leave their mark on any competitors who stood in the way.
The journey proved to be a success, with the competitors bringing eight medals back to Newcastle.

The medal winners were:
- Chloe van Schalkwyk – Winning a gold for kata and silver for kumite.
- Nikhyle Singh – Clinching a bronze for kata.
- Paiuren Dass – Winning a bronze for kata.
- Danè Beamson – Securing a gold medal for kata, as well as a gold medal for kumite.
- Chardy Beamson – Won a bronze for kata.
- Henko Bruin – Won a silver for kata.
With the excellent performance by the karateka, Butokukan Newcastle Sensei, Sensei Frik Willemse expressed his pride in the local competitors. As their performance will play an instrumental role in further competitions.
“This tournament will assist the Butokukan Newcastle students in preparing for the World Union of Karate-do Federations (WUKF) National Karate Championships which will be take place later this year,” he explained.
